It was eleven words and she can say them from memory and she has never written them down, and she knows exactly where she was standing and what the light was doing.
It was during the dancing. Nobody was recording. There were four people in earshot and one of them was her sister.
Odette was thirty one then. She is thirty eight now.
Her sister forgave her. That is the thing that makes this so strange to explain. Her sister forgave her properly, out loud, on the phone, about five weeks later, in a conversation Odette can also repeat from memory, and has never once raised it since. There are photographs of the two of them at Christmas. They speak most weeks. Her sister's youngest is named after their grandmother, and Odette was there when she was born.
And every single time the family is in a room together, at about the second hour, Odette hears the eleven words again in her own voice, at exactly the volume she said them.
She stopped drinking four years ago. That was part of why. And the stopping did nothing at all to the recording, which plays whether or not there is anything in her glass.
You know that sentence. It might be words, or a scene, or something you did in a room full of people. It has been dealt with by everybody involved. And it still runs, on the same reel, at the same volume, and nobody knows because you have never told them it is playing.
You are forgiven on the ground of God's own justice, and you were never relying on Him being in a lenient mood. John says if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and just is a courtroom word rather than a kind one; that is exactly what stands written, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that distinction real for a woman at the second hour of a family gathering.
Faithful and just to forgive
Let me name the thing exactly, because it is not guilt and treating it as guilt is why nothing has worked.
Guilt would have been settled by your sister's phone call. It was settled. What is still running is not a question about whether you are forgiven; it is a recording, and a recording does not respond to argument. You have argued with it for seven years. It plays anyway.
And I want to be clear about something this site is careful about: nothing here is telling you to raise it with your sister again. She has closed it. Reopening a thing somebody has put down can be a weight handed back to them, and only you and the people who know you can judge that. This is about the copy that runs in your own head, which is a different matter.
So here is the verse, and I want the second adjective.
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.1 John 1:9
Faithful, everybody expects. God keeps His word, and that is a comfort.
But just. That is a strange word to find there, and it is the important one. Just means according to what is right. It is a legal word. It says that forgiving you is not God being generous, or making an exception, or looking the other way because He is fond of you. It says forgiving you is the correct verdict, because the matter has been dealt with elsewhere, at the cross, and to refuse it now would be the injustice.
You are forgiven as a matter of what is right, and you were never depending on God being in a good mood about you. That is what stands written in 1 John 1, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that a legal fact rather than a hopeful feeling at the second hour of a family lunch.
And notice how little the verse asks. If we confess. Confess means to say the same thing: to agree with God about what a thing was. It does not say if we make it right, if we feel it enough, if we suffer for it appropriately, or if we never think about it again. One condition, and it is a matter of agreement rather than performance.
You are able to meet the whole of what the verse asks, and you were never being measured on how badly you feel about it. Scripture makes agreement the only condition, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps a person from adding a second one nobody wrote.
And then the last clause, which is the one for the recording: and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Cleanse is a different action from forgive. Forgiveness deals with the charge. Cleansing deals with the stain, the residue, the thing that keeps coming off on your hands afterward. John names both, separately, because the second one is a real and distinct need and God did not overlook it.
You are cleansed as well as forgiven, and you were never left holding the residue after the charge was dropped. The written word names two distinct actions in one sentence, and the Holy Spirit is the one who does the second one for a woman with eleven words on a loop.
And the plain thing, which we say every time here. A recording that has run for seven years is worth telling somebody about, and it is exactly the kind of thing a counselor is good at. So is a friend outside the family, or the room where people say true things out loud. That is God's kindness with a face on it, and using it takes nothing away from what God has already settled.
So here is what is true, seven years on, at about the second hour of any family gathering.
You are forgiven as a matter of justice and cleansed as a separate act, and you were both of those things through every replay of the last seven years. The word says if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness, and the Holy Spirit is the one doing both. Nothing about your sister has to be revisited. Something ordinary is going to happen instead. The sentence is going to be said out loud once, to God, exactly as you said it, and then you are going to say out loud that it is confessed and done, and God is going to be in the room for both halves.
Declare this over yourself
Before you speak, get the ground settled: this is not you earning back a place at a table you already have. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that standing was settled at the cross and not in a phone call five weeks after a wedding. So say these three out loud, and leave the outcome with Him. However He answers, and whatever the reel does next, that is His to carry and it was never yours to arrange.
- Sentence I said in that room, you were eleven words and you are not the whole of who I am. Scripture says He is faithful and just to forgive, and just means the ground of it is not my behavior.
- Recording that starts by itself at the second hour of every family gathering, you have run for seven years and you are not evidence of anything, and in the name of Jesus you are out of this house. It is written that He cleanses as well as forgives, and the Holy Spirit dealt with the residue and not only the charge.
- Lord, You called forgiving me just, which means refusing it would have been the wrong verdict, and I thank You that this was never about You being in a generous mood. My sentence is said out loud once and it is confessed and done, and I am going to that lunch without the reel running.
