I Am In the Wedding Party

The dress is hanging on the back of the bedroom door in its bag, and it has been hanging there for eleven days, and Shantae has stopped taking her coat off in that room because it means walking past it.

Her sister is getting married on the fourteenth. She is the maid of honor. There is a speech, which she has written, and there are photographs at four, and a receiving line, and a top table, and a first dance, and after the first dance there is a room with a free bar in it until one in the morning.

She cannot leave. That is the entire content of the thing sitting on her chest. Every other event in her life for two years she has handled the same way: she goes, she stays a while, and when the room turns she gets her coat. It has never once failed her. On the fourteenth there is no coat and no door, because she is on the top table and in the photographs and she is her sister's maid of honor, and disappearing at nine o'clock is not something she is willing to do to her sister on her wedding day.

So the exit, which has been her whole method, is gone.

She has not told anybody this. Her sister has enough. Her mother would make it into something. So it sits in her, alone, and every time she walks past that bag on the door it gets a little heavier.

Eleven days.

You know that event. It might be a wedding, a christening, a funeral where you are one of the family. Everywhere else you can leave. Here you are part of the thing, and the method that has held you up for two years does not apply, and that is what is actually frightening.

You are dressed for a long evening in something you did not have to manufacture, and you were never sent out to supply your own covering. Ephesians says take unto you the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand; that is exactly what stands written, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that real for a woman looking at a dress bag on the back of a door.

Having done all, to stand

Let me name the actual fear, because it is not the bar.

It is that your one reliable tool has been taken away. For two years the answer to a hard room has been leaving it, and leaving has worked, and now there is an evening with no leaving in it. What you are looking at when you look at that dress bag is not a party. It is nine hours with the escape hatch welded shut, and every version of the evening you have run has you standing in the middle of it with no move to make.

So let me put the passage next to that, and let me point at the verb.

Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.Ephesians 6:13

Take unto you. Put on. That is not a manufacturing word, it is a dressing word. The armor is not produced by the soldier out of his own resources, it is issued and it is worn, and every piece of it in the verses that follow belongs to God before it belongs to anybody: His truth, His righteousness, His peace, His word. You are not being asked to generate anything on the fourteenth. You are being asked to put on what is already yours.

You are wearing something that was issued rather than made, and you were never expected to produce your own protection for that hall. That is what stands written in Ephesians 6, and the Holy Spirit is the one who does the dressing for a woman who has run out of her own methods.

Now the objective, and this is the sentence I want you to carry into that reception. Having done all, to stand. That is the whole aim. Not to win, not to conquer the room, not to have a wonderful time, not to be the version of yourself everybody remembers. To stand. To be found still there when it is over.

You have an objective you can actually meet, and you were never given the room as something to defeat. Scripture names standing as the end of the instruction, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes an impossible aim off a person and hands back a possible one.

And notice the word withstand. It is a defensive word. Paul is not describing a charge. He is describing a person on ground that is already theirs, staying on it. Which means the fourteenth is not a battle you have to go and win at your sister's wedding. It is ground you already occupy, and the entire assignment is not to leave it.

You are standing on ground that is already yours, and you were never being sent out to take anything. The written word says withstand and then says stand, twice in one sentence, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that distinction usable at a top table at eleven at night.

And the plain things, which this site says every time. You owe nobody in that hall an explanation, including at the top table. If you need ten minutes outside, take ten minutes outside; stepping out of a room is not leaving your sister. And if the friend who knows, the doctor, the counselor, the room with the circle of chairs is what gets you to the fourteenth, use it, because it is God's kindness with a face on it. And tell one person who is going to be there. Not for permission. So that one human being in that hall knows, and you are not the only one holding it.
