It is a green Ford with a dent in the left rear panel from a gatepost in 2009, and there is a rod holder welded on the side that Rusty made himself out of conduit, and Cal would know that truck at four hundred yards in the dark.
It is outside the Landing most Fridays when he drives back from town, and it is outside the Landing tonight.
Twenty two years. They fished the Little Bear together from when Cal was twenty six. Rusty taught him where the fish sit when the water comes up. Rusty stood in a church at Cal's wedding and again, differently, at his father's funeral, and did not say much on either occasion because he never does.
And for the last three years, since Cal stopped, they have talked exactly four times.
Nothing happened. Cal wants that on the record because he has heard people tell this story the other way. There was no falling out. Rusty did not say anything. Cal stopped going to the Landing on a Friday and it turned out that the Landing on a Friday was where a lot of it lived, and then the fishing got harder to arrange, and then it stopped getting arranged.
He drives past. He does not slow down and he does not speed up. And every single time he does it, the same thing happens in his chest, and it is not judgement and it is not anger, and if he had to name it he would say it feels like driving past his own younger life parked in a lot.
You know that truck. It might be a car, a bar, a house you drive past, a name that comes up. Nobody in the story is a bad person. What is sitting on you is twenty years of something real that lived in a place you no longer go.
You are not standing on that road by yourself, and you were never left with the missing and nobody in it with you. Paul wrote that at his first defense no man stood with him, and in the very next breath that the Lord stood with him and strengthened him; that is exactly what stands written, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that second sentence as real as the first on a Friday drive home.
The Lord stood with me
Let me put the ache into plain words, because a man will drive past that lot for three years and never once say this out loud.
You did not lose a drinking buddy. You lost the man who taught you where the fish sit. What went with the drinking was not only the drinking, and nobody warns you about that part. And the reason you cannot talk about it is that the only two available versions both feel like lies: either he let you down, which is not true, or it does not matter, which is also not true.
So here is Paul, at the end of everything, writing to Timothy from a cell.
At my first answer no man stood with me, but all men forsook me: I pray God that it may not be laid to their charge. Notwithstanding the Lord stood with me, and strengthened me.2 Timothy 4:16-17
He says the true thing first. No man stood with me. He does not soften it, he does not pretend he had plenty of support, and he does not tell Timothy that it was fine. He names the absence.
You are permitted to name the absence out loud, and you were never obliged to pretend the gap was smaller than it is. That is what stands written in 2 Timothy 4, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a man say a hard true sentence without it becoming an accusation.
And then look at what he does next, immediately, before anything else: I pray God that it may not be laid to their charge. He asks for it not to be counted against them. That is the whole handling of the offense, in one clause, and it is a prayer rather than a verdict. Paul does not spend a paragraph on who was where. He notes the fact, hands it over, and moves on.
You are able to hand this over rather than hold a case open, and you were never appointed as the accountant on anybody's absence. Scripture puts the prayer for them right beside the naming of the gap, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a man drive past a lot without opening a file.
And then the sentence that changes the drive. Notwithstanding the Lord stood with me, and strengthened me. Stood with. The same verb he used about the men who did not. It is a deliberate contrast: the standing that did not happen, and the standing that did, in the same posture, in the same room, at the same hour.
You are stood with in the exact place where somebody is not there, and you were never given emptiness without company in it. The written word uses the same word twice on purpose, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that swap real in a truck at half past six on a Friday.
And the plain things, the way I would say them leaning on a gate. Rusty is not a bad man and you are not required to decide that he is. He is your friend with twenty two years in him and a life of his own that you do not have the whole of. And the river is still there. The friendship happened in two places, not one, and you have written off both because one of them closed. Go to the other one. And if the friend who knows, the doctor, the counselor, or the room in the church basement on a Tuesday is what helps, use it. That is God's kindness with a face on it and it never once made anybody's faith smaller.
So here is where it stands, on a Friday, with a green Ford in a gravel lot behind you in the mirror.
You are stood with tonight, and you were being stood with on every one of the Fridays you drove past that lot and said nothing. The word says notwithstanding the Lord stood with me, and strengthened me, and the Holy Spirit is the one doing that standing in a truck on a road you have driven for twenty years. Nothing dramatic is going to happen this week. Something ordinary is. You are going to get down to the Little Bear, on a day, with a rod, and God is going to be on that bank the same as He has been on that road, and Rusty is still your friend whether or not the two of you ever fish it again.
Declare this over yourself
Before you speak, get the footing right: this is not a man talking himself out of a sadness. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and the right to speak over a Friday evening has been given to you as a standing, and a truck in a lot does not get a vote on it. So say these three out loud in the cab, and leave the outcome with Him. However He answers, and whatever He does with Rusty, that is His to carry and it was never yours to arrange.
- Twenty years of Saturdays on that river, you were real and I am not wrong to miss you. Scripture says the Lord stood with me and strengthened me, and He is standing with me on this road tonight.
- Pull to make my friend into a lesser man so that this hurts less, you are not getting my twenty two years, and in the name of Jesus you are out of this truck. It is written that Paul prayed it not be laid to their charge, and the Holy Spirit closed that file before I ever got a chance to open one.
- Lord, You used the same word for the standing that did not happen and the standing that did, and I thank You that You put Yourself exactly where the gap was. My rod is going in the back and I am getting down to that water, and You are on the bank the same as You have been on this road.
2 Timothy 4:17
