There is a long table at the back of the community room, and it has been the same eight or nine men at it on a Thursday for about twelve years, and Micha can hear it happen from the door.
Not silence. It is not that dramatic. It is a dip. The volume drops about a third for a second and a half and then it comes back up, and then somebody says his name warmly and somebody else moves a chair, and it is all perfectly fine, and he can hear the dip every single time.
He has known these men most of his adult life. Two of them he was at school with. Yossi came to the hospital when his father was ill and sat there for six hours reading a newspaper and saying nothing, which is one of the kindest things anybody has ever done for him.
And now he walks in on a Thursday and the room adjusts, for a second and a half, before it comes back.
He knows what the dip is. It is nine men who have known him twenty years working out, in real time, whether the joke that was in the air is a joke they can still finish. It is not judgement. It is care, applied clumsily, by men who have no vocabulary for this and have never been given one.
He knows all that. He can explain it to himself completely. And he still hears it, every Thursday, and it still puts a small weight in his chest that lasts about an hour after he sits down.
You know that dip. It might be a table, an office, a family kitchen. Nobody has been unkind. What has happened is that you have become a thing people are careful about, and being careful about somebody is a form of love that does not feel like love from the inside.
You are loved at all times by the arrangement Scripture describes, and you were never being tolerated at that table. The Proverb says a friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity, which names the hard season as the one the relationship was built for; the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that a live fact about nine men and a long table on a Thursday.
A brother is born for adversity
Let me name the ache exactly, because if you name it wrong you will act on the wrong thing.
You are not being excluded. You are being handled. And handling is what happens when people love you and are frightened of getting it wrong, and there is no way to be angry at it without being unfair to men who mean well. So you swallow it, every Thursday, and it accumulates, and after a while you start considering not going, which is the only move that would actually break anything.
So here is the proverb, and it is two halves and they belong together.
A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.Proverbs 17:17
At all times. Not at good times. Not once the awkwardness has passed. The love in that sentence is described as continuous across every kind of season, including the seasons where nobody knows how to behave.
You are loved across seasons and you were never loved only across the comfortable ones, and this Thursday is one of the times in all times. That is what stands written in Proverbs 17, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that phrase reach into a second and a half of dipped volume at a community room door.
And now the second half, which is the one that reframes the whole Thursday. A brother is born for adversity. Born for. The hard season is not the thing that tests the friendship; it is the thing the friendship was made for in the first place. So a table full of men who do not know what to say to you is not a table failing at friendship. It is a table in the exact conditions the relationship exists to be used in.
You are in the season the friendship was made for, and you were never watching it break down. Scripture says born for adversity, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a man reinterpret an awkward room as the room working rather than the room ending.
And here is a thing worth saying about men in particular, and it is not an insult to any of them. Nine men at a table have between them almost no practice at this. Nobody taught them. They will do it badly for a while, and doing a thing badly is what it looks like when people are doing a thing they were never trained in and have decided to do anyway.
You are watching people try, and you were never watching people withdraw. The written word never once measures a friendship by how gracefully it handles a hard stretch, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a man tell effort and rejection apart.
And the plain thing, said the way this site always says it. You do not owe those men an explanation and they do not owe you a smooth Thursday. Nothing has to be said. What changes a dip is time and repetition, and the single most useful thing you can do is be there before them. And if the friend, the counselor, the room where people talk about exactly this, is what helps you carry the small weight that lasts an hour, use it, because that is God's kindness with a face on it and it has never made any man's faith smaller.
So here is what is true on Thursday, at the door of a community room with a long table at the back of it.
You are loved at that table and you were loved at it through every one of the dips, and this is the season the friendship was born for. The word says a friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that reading of a Thursday available to you. Nothing dramatic is going to happen this week. Something ordinary is. You are going to get there first and sit down and be the one already in the chair when the room fills, and God is going to be at that table, and the dip is going to get shorter, and one Thursday it will not be there.
Declare this over yourself
Before you speak, get the ground under it settled: this is not you talking yourself into being fine. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and the right to speak over your own Thursday has been given to you as a standing, and nine men at a table do not get a vote on it. So say these three out loud before you go in, and leave the outcome with Him. However He answers, and whatever He does with that table, that is His to carry and it was never yours to arrange.
- Half second of quiet when I walk in, you are a room adjusting and you are not a room turning against me. Scripture says a friend loves at all times, and all times includes the times when nobody knows what to say.
- Small weight that sits on me for an hour after I sit down, you are not the measure of twenty years, and in the name of Jesus you are off my chest. It is written that a brother is born for adversity, and the Holy Spirit says this season is the one the friendship was made for and not the one that ends it.
- Lord, Yossi sat in a hospital for six hours reading a newspaper and saying nothing, and I thank You that You taught men to love badly and out loud rather than gracefully and not at all. I am getting there first on Thursday and taking my chair, and I am loved at that table at all times.
