There is a bend on the road out of town where the hedge comes right up to the tarmac, and Emilio has driven past it about nine thousand times, and every so often, without any warning, he has to pull over just past it.
He does not know how many times he drove home like that. That is the honest answer and it is worse than a number. Somewhere between four and five years of most Fridays and a good many other nights.
Nothing ever happened. Not once. He never hit anything, he was never stopped, nobody was ever hurt. He got home every single time and put the keys in the bowl by the door, and in the morning it was the morning.
He stopped seven years ago. He has three grandchildren now. The oldest is eleven and Emilio is teaching him about engines on a Saturday in a driveway.
And here is what nobody would guess about that man, standing in a driveway with a rag in his hand: he cannot get past what did not happen. Not what he did, because in the ordinary sense he did not do anything. What sits on him is the size of what was available. Every one of those nights had a version where somebody's child was on that bend, and he can see the version, and the fact that it did not happen does not stop him seeing it.
He has never told anybody this. It sounds absurd said out loud. Nothing happened.
You know that road. It might be a car, a stove left on, a night you cannot account for. Nothing came of it. And what you carry is not the memory of a thing you did, it is the shadow of a thing that almost was, and there is nowhere to take it because on paper there is nothing to take.
You are living where no condemnation stands, and you were never going to be sentenced for a case nobody brought. Paul says there is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, and the word therefore points back at something already finished; the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that a live fact for a man who has to pull over past a bend.
There is therefore now no condemnation
Let me name it properly, because the ordinary comfort people offer is useless here and you have probably had it a few times.
People say: but nothing happened. And that is true and it changes nothing, because the thing you are carrying is not about outcomes. You know exactly what you were doing. The outcome was not yours. It was weather. And a man who understands that he escaped by weather rather than by care cannot be talked out of it by being told he escaped.
Here is the verse, and I want the first word.
There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.Romans 8:1
Therefore. It does not begin a new subject. It concludes one. Everything in front of it, seven chapters of it, is the argument, and the last thing Paul does before this sentence is describe a man wretched and divided and crying out for rescue, and then answer his own question: I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. Therefore. The verdict comes after the rescue and because of it.
You are living downstream of something already concluded, and you were never being asked to argue your own case. That is what stands written in Romans 8, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes therefore load bearing for a man in a driveway with a rag in his hand.
And then now. Not eventually, not once enough time has gone by, not after seven years of good behavior. Now. The verse plants a stake in the present tense and says the condemnation is not standing at this moment, whatever is standing in your imagination.
You have a present tense verdict, and you were never on a waiting list for it. Scripture puts now in the middle of the sentence, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes it current on a Saturday morning seven years later.
And the word condemnation itself is worth a moment. It is a courtroom word: it means a sentence passed, the formal outcome of a case. Which means the verse is not saying you should feel better. It is making a legal statement about your status, and a legal status does not change with how a man feels when he drives past a hedge.
You are in a status rather than a mood, and you were never being asked to feel your way into it. The written word uses a courtroom term and not an emotional one, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps that distinction usable by a man who still has to pull over sometimes.
And now the plain thing, said the way this site says it every time. What you carry about that road is heavy and it has never been said out loud to a human being, and that is the part that can change this week. A counselor. A friend. The room where people say true things out loud and nobody flinches at any of it. That is God's kindness with a face on it. And I will say this too, since it is a driveway and there is a boy learning about engines: the man teaching him is not the same man who drove that bend, and the boy is being taught by the one who is here.
So here is what is true this morning, in a driveway, with a rag in your hand and a boy asking about the dipstick.
You are standing under no condemnation right now, and you were standing under none through every one of the seven years you have been pulling over past that bend. The word says there is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, and the Holy Spirit is the one applying that here, this morning, in the present tense. Nothing is going to be relitigated today. Something ordinary is going to happen instead. Five words are going to be said out loud, and then you are going to do one thing that takes both hands, and God is going to be in that driveway all morning.
Declare this over yourself
Before you speak, get the ground settled: this is not a man deciding to let himself off. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and the verdict on you was settled at the cross and not by an outcome on a road. So say these three out loud in the driveway, and leave the outcome with Him. However He answers, and whatever your memory does at that bend, that is His to carry and it was never yours to arrange.
- Roads I do not remember driving, you are behind me and you are not a case being brought. Scripture says there is therefore now no condemnation, and now is the word it puts in the middle.
- Version of a night where somebody's child was on that bend, you are a picture and you are not a charge sheet, and in the name of Jesus you are out of my driveway. It is written that condemnation is a courtroom word, and the Holy Spirit settles a status and does not wait on how I feel about a hedge.
- Lord, the verse starts with therefore, which means the whole case was closed before I got to the sentence, and I thank You that I was never asked to argue my own. My words are said out loud and my hands are on this hood, and I am teaching my grandson about engines with You standing in this driveway.
