It arrives at about one, in the back of the same car, and it goes on the step by the kitchen door because that is the coolest place, and it has gone on that step every Sunday for eleven years.
Hector's brother Beto brings it. Beto brings it because Beto brings things: he brings the crate, he brings a bag of ice, he brings the dominoes and the speaker and, every so often, an entire pig. He is the most generous man Hector has ever known and he would give you the roof off his car.
Sunday at Hector's is the whole family, twenty odd people, from one until it gets dark. It is the best day of the week and Hector would not change one thing about it, including his brother.
He stopped drinking four years ago and he told nobody, because in that family a man who makes an announcement gets an audience for the rest of his life. So there was no announcement, and there was no conversation, and after a while people noticed and did not say anything, which is exactly what he wanted.
And every Sunday at about one, a crate goes on the step by the kitchen door.
He is not tempted. He has been four years and he is steady and he would tell you plainly it is not that. It is that his own back yard, on his own best day, contains something he has to be aware of from one o'clock until dark, and there is nowhere in twenty odd people and one back yard that he is not aware of it.
You know that day. It might be a Sunday, a Christmas, a Saturday night. The best day you have arrives every week with something in it, and the person who brings it loves you, and nobody is doing a single thing wrong.
You have your feet set in a large room by God Himself, and you were never left standing in something narrow. The psalm says thou hast known my soul in adversities, thou hast set my feet in a large room, and the setting is described as His act; that is exactly what stands written, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes room a real thing in a back yard with twenty people in it.
Thou hast set my feet in a large room
Let me name the thing exactly, because it is small and constant and that is what makes it wearing.
It is not craving. Four years in, the craving is not the story. What is wearing is awareness: the low hum of knowing where a thing is in a space, all afternoon, every week, forever. It costs almost nothing per minute and it runs for seven hours, and by dark you are tired in a way that the day does not account for and nobody can see.
And I am not going to tell you to say anything to Beto. Eleven years of a man bringing things is eleven years of love expressed the only way he knows, and what a sentence from you would do to that is not something a page can judge. If you ever say anything, say it because it would be good, and if it would not be, that is a real answer.
Here is the verse, and I want the picture in it.
I will be glad and rejoice in thy mercy: for thou hast considered my trouble; thou hast known my soul in adversities; and hast set my feet in a large room.Psalm 31:7-8
A large room. The Hebrew is a word for a broad place, a wide open space, and it is the standard opposite in that language of being in a tight spot. To be in distress in Hebrew is literally to be in a narrow place. To be delivered is to be brought out into the wide.
You are standing in a wide place, and you were never left in the narrow one. That is what stands written in Psalm 31, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes width a real experience in a yard that is physically not very big.
And thou hast set. The verb is His. David did not find the large room, walk into it, or negotiate his way toward it. His feet were put there by somebody else, and the tense is complete. It has been done.
You have been placed rather than having found your own way, and you were never the one who had to locate the space. Scripture makes the placing God's completed act, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps a man from thinking he has to manufacture his own room on a Sunday.
And notice the clause just before it, because it is the one that makes the room bearable: thou hast known my soul in adversities. Known. Not observed, not been aware of. The Hebrew word is the one for intimate personal knowledge, and it is used about the adversities specifically. God knows him in the tight place, and the wide place comes after that and because of it.
You are known inside the narrow stretch and you were never met only once you were out of it, and the knowing came first. The written word puts the knowing before the setting, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes both of them true of a man between one o'clock and dark.
And the plain thing, said the way this site always says it. Four years of a low hum every Sunday that nobody in your family knows about is a real weight, and it should not be carried entirely alone. A friend outside the family, a counselor, the room where people say true things out loud on a weeknight. That is God's kindness with a face on it, and it takes nothing at all from your brother.
So here is what is true on Sunday, at one o'clock, with a crate going onto a step and twenty people arriving.
You have your feet set in a wide place and you were known in the narrow one first, and both of those are His doing. The word says thou hast known my soul in adversities, and hast set my feet in a large room, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that width real in a small back yard. Nothing about that crate is going to change. Something ordinary is going to happen instead. You are going to take a job outdoors and do it for the first half hour before you sit down, and God is going to be in that yard from one o'clock until it gets dark.
Declare this over yourself
Before you speak, get the ground settled: this is not you taking a position on anything your brother does. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and the right to speak over your own Sunday has been given to you as a standing, and a box on a step does not get a vote on it. So say these three out loud before people arrive, and leave the outcome with Him. However He answers, and whatever Sunday looks like, that is His to carry and it was never yours to arrange.
- Crate that comes in every Sunday, you are a box on a step and you are not the size of this day. Scripture says He hath set my feet in a large room, and He is the one who did the setting.
- Low hum of knowing exactly where a thing is from one o'clock until dark, you are not going to have my best day of the week, and in the name of Jesus you are out of my yard. It is written that distress is a narrow place and deliverance is a wide one, and the Holy Spirit put my feet in the wide one already.
- Lord, You knew his soul in the adversities before You ever set his feet anywhere, and I thank You that the knowing came first and the room came after it. My job is taken and I am at that grill from one o'clock, and my feet are standing in a large room in a small back yard.
